Faculty members at UIS are teacher-scholars at a public university, inspired by the highest ideals of public service. Quality affordable education is our goal. As a teaching faculty we have chosen to work at a state institution that serves students from all backgrounds, providing an intimate, intense, small liberal arts college experience that is affordable to under-served students.
Ensuring that faculty and administrators serve the university as equal partners to foster both quality and efficiency is crucial. Faculty and administrators must serve the university as cooperative partners. A unionized faculty that bargains collectively will strengthen shared governance and assure increased administrative transparency and accountability.
Academic freedom and autonomy are essential to recruiting and retaining a high quality faculty. So is fair pay. While wages are important, campus faculty have other priorities that must be balanced with financial compensation, such as working conditions and autonomy, and keeping tuition costs down. UIS United Faculty will strive to achieve a balance between fair pay, working conditions that support quality education, and an overall vision of quality and efficiency that will keep UIS affordable.
