Welcome back, and to our new faculty, welcome to UIS! This fall we have a great deal to celebrate as we move forward with our first contract, which was signed into effect just last week. Your (searchable) copy of the new contract is available at https://uisufinfo.wordpress.com/contract/. You can also see the contract on the UIS web page (http://www.uis.edu/humanresources/labor/). The UIS United Faculty web site also provides a link to the Chancellor’s memo establishing a Procedure Review Committee, a new mechanism for addressing procedural violations in the reappointment and tenure process. This memo was agreed upon as part of our bargaining process. Over the course of the fall semester, we will update you on the progress of implementing the contract, and will schedule information sessions to answer your questions about contract provisions.
Our first contract is a tremendous collective achievement. This could not have been done without the hard work of our bargaining team, the at-large bargaining committee, and many of you who contributed in a variety of ways over the two years of our negotiation process. We can be very proud of what we have accomplished together. This year, as we work together to educate ourselves about the new contract and its implementation, we will also hold officer elections as required by our bylaws (https://uisufinfo.wordpress.com/chapter-by-laws/). Most importantly, we look forward to working with all of you you to determine what we hope to achieve together at UIS.
And of course, we will be contacting you with details of a fall social very soon!
So to all of us — congratulations, and let’s work together to keep moving forward as a union.
With best wishes for the new semester,
