Starting this month we will be sending monthly updates about union activities, events, news, and opportunities.
Call for volunteers
-Student Move-in Day: UIS United Faculty has volunteered to help students move into UIS housing on Fri. 8/21. Volunteers are needed for morning (8-12:30) shifts. If you want to help, please send your name to: firstname.lastname@example.org. The UPI will provide water and t-shirts to all volunteers. This is great opportunity to meet new students and represent our union! [10Aug15: Info corrected in above paragraph]
-UISUF is closely monitoring contract negotiations between the state and AFSCME employees. Governor Rauner has proposed drastic increases in healthcare insurance costs for employees that, if adopted, will affect UIS employees. UISUF is prepared to make any increases in healthcare insurance costs a topic in our first contract negotiations. Read more here.
-UISUF has filed 3 grievances on behalf of members under the current Personnel Policies and is actively advising and representing members in ongoing grievance processes; more about this at our Fall general membership meeting;
-The Executive Board has been meeting regularly over the summer to build our organizational structure, identify a Grievance Officer, and plan events and activities;
-The At-Large Bargaining Committee is hard at work writing a draft Collective Bargaining Agreement (i.e. contract) and will soon submit a “Demand to Bargain” letter to the university to start negotiating our first contract;
-Over the summer UISUF members met with members of the State Legislature at a lobby day and attended contract negotiation and leadership training workshops in Chicago and Springfield; in August, members will be attending leadership training in Chicago.

-Negotiating Team: 6-10 members who actively negotiate our contract with the administration or support that team with information and expertise through the contract negotiation process; lots of support and training provided!
-At-Large Bargaining Committee: members who draft the Collective Bargaining Agreement we will present the administration as the first step in bargaining; members from CEHS and CBM are especially needed here!
-Grievance Officer: advises members and shepherds member grievances through the grievance process;
-Communications Committee: outreach to current and prospective members;oversees Facebook and WordPress site; produces monthly newsletter; organizes union activities.
-Fall Faculty Social: UISUF and the IFT will host a faculty social at the beginning of fall semester; time/date/place TBD;
-Happy Hour: starting in September, UISUF members are invited to meet for a monthly happy hour; time/date/place TBD.
